Our Great Leaders

Party constitution was drafted by the Present Leader Ariyawansa Dissanayake and Attorney at Law Rahal Gunarathna. The ‘Flower Lotus’ was selected as the party symbol at the first registration but the Commissioner of Elections did not accept it and therefore we had to amend it to the ‘Eagle’. Party colour was unanimously approved as Yellow and Green.

Queen’s Counsel A.C Gunarathna was appointed as the First President of the party. Hon. LalithAthulathmudali and Hon. Gamini Dissanayake were elected as Senior Vice Presidents. Hon. Dharmasiri Fonseka was elected as the General Secretary and Attorney at Law Rahal Gunarathna was elected as the Treasurer.

Elder Hon. Lalith Athulathmudali was elected as the Leader of the Party by their mutual agreement even though Hon. Gamini Dissanayake had more experience in the political field. It was endorsed by the Working Committee as well as the Executive Committee unanimously.

Qualifying as a recognized and registered political party, started formation of branches, addressed small groups and massive rallies covering the whole Island with help of lots of civil organizations, and party opinion was dripped in to the minds of people.

Even though our party was newly formed, we faced the Provincial Council Election successfully with the well-tempered broad experience of our leaders that held on 17th May 1993. When election campaign was on, holding massive rallies throughout the country, Our Party Leader Hon.Lalith Athulathmudali was assassinated by a unknown person on 23rd April 1993 while addressing the Kirulapone Rally. Even after this unfortunate incident the people of this country voted our party giving 906,205 votes and 53 councilors for Provincial Councils making third highest in the party ranking. Our party was able to retain this amount of votes as an individual party and no party has been able to achieve this so far.

After the death of our leader Hon.Lalith Athulathmudali, Hon. Gamini Dissanayake was elected as the party leader and Hon .G.M Premachandra was elected as the General Secretary. Hon. Ariyawansa Dissanayake, who previously performed as the Vice President, was elected as the President of the party as the Previous President Queen’s Counsel A.C Gunarathna left the party. The Leadership which went vacant with Hon. Gamini Dissanayake rejoining the United National Party on 29th January 1994 was filled by the party General Secretary Hon.G.M Premachandra.

In the 1994 Presidential Election, the Democratic United National Front joined as an allied party to the United National Party. The Presidential Candidate Hon. Gamini Dissanayake and our party leader Hon. G.M Premachandra were assassinated by a suicide bomb attack while addressing a Campaign held at Thotalanga on 23rd October 1994. The vacant Party Leader position was filled by the President Hon. Ariyawansa Dissanayake, then Hon. M.B Rathnayake was elected as the President, Attorney at Law Gamini Peiris was elected as the General Secretary and Charted Accountant John Sebastian was elected as the Treasurer unanimously.

There were numerous opinions over the Defeat of terrorism in the North. Our party strongly believed that our brave armed forces can defeat the terrorist in the North addopting a proper working plan. Our party leader Hon. Ariyawansa Dissanayake contested for the Presidential Election 1999 with the following suggestions: our brave armed forces can defeat the terrorist in the North addopting a proper working plan, Establishment of Parliament Election System comprising the First Past the Post (FPP) system and Proportional Election System (PES) that to get a Member of Parliament who is responsible for people of the area, secure the “unitary state” of the country and abolishment of Executive Presidency. Assuring sustainable development by appropriate management of both country’s resources and foreign investments on a national plan, A fair economic policy is which the resources of the country is shared among all the citizens in a fair manner.

After the Presidential Election, Hon. Ariyawansa Dissanayake served in the position of party General secretary in addition to the position of party leader; Hon. D.M.G Ekanayake was elected as the President after the resignation of President Hon. M.B Rathnayake and Hon.Jayakody Ranasinghe was elected to the Treasurer post after the resignation of Hon. John Sebastian.

Our party which was in the stern stance that the Terror in the North can be defeated by a local mechanism decided to support the Freedom Alliance candidate Hon.Mahinda Rajapaksha at the 2005 Presidential Election. Even though Hon.Mahinda Rajapaksha won the Election and defeated the terrorist with help of our brave security forces but the other four main suggestions that we brought forward were not answered by him.

Hon. M.C Mohammed Ismail was selected as the General Secretary of the party on 23rd October 2009. In 2010 Presidential Election we actively involved the election campaign of General Sarath Fonseka who campaigned under the sign of ‘Swan’ by New Democratic Party. Hon.Mohomed Ismail, the General Secretary of the party went against the party decision of supporting General Fonseka and contested Election as a candidate and later resigned from the Party. Soon after,Hon. R.M Ariyawansha was appointed as the General Secretary of the party.

We contested the 2010 General Election team up with Democratic National Alliance. The first amendment of the party constitution was done on 15th June 2011 and true copy of the same was sent to the Elections Commissioner. The second amendment of the constitution was done at the Special Convention held on 16th March 2013 proposing party new name as ‘United National Front’ and it was approved. A copy was sent to the Elections Commissioner for approval. In addition, the minute of the party Special Convention was sent to the Elections Commissioner and waiting for his response.

Later on we engaged in political activities with the Democratic National Alliance up to 2015. We join to endorse the victory of Hon.Maithreepala Sirisena who campaigned under the symbol ‘Swan’ at the Presidential Election in 2015. After resignation of General Secretary Hon.
